Marie Hassebroek passed away at the Adrian Country Living Home on July 22, 2010, her 88th birthday. Marie was born July 22, 1922 in Little Rock Township to Jake and Tena (Ebbenga) Stratmeier. She was born the sixth child out of eight children. Marie completed her education through the eighth grade at a country school 7 miles south of Rushmore. After her schooling, she worked for people in the area as a hired girl, taking care of the housekeeping, cooking, cleaning, making meals for the family and caring for the children when their mother had a new baby. Marie married John Hassebroek in the living room of his parent?s home in Little Rock Twp. on February 18, 1942. They started out renting a farm, and then later purchased a farm southeast of Adrian where they spent their farming life. Together they had three children, Roger, Loren and Marvin. Marie had 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She also had 2 step-grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren. Marie and John retired from farming and moved to Adrian. John and Marie celebrated over 55 years of marriage before John passed away on September 13, 1997. Her faith was important to Marie. She was a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Rushmore for over 60 years. She served on the Ladies Aid for over 50 years. She was a long time volunteer at the Arnold Memorial Nursing Home in Adrian. Marie loved to cook and bake, garden and crochet. She enjoyed playing cards and was a member of several card clubs. She also enjoyed making crafts and made decorative door signs for every resident at the nursing home, something she truly enjoyed doing. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends, a highlight of which was an annual Memorial Day Weekend fishing at Lake Ocheda with her family and her sister Fannie?s family. She had a joyful heart. We, who celebrate her life, are sons, Roger (Diane) of Redwood Falls, MN; Loren of Adrian, MN; and Marv (Gina) of Adrian, MN; grandchildren, Melissa Hassebroek, Chad (Shannon) Hassebroek, Mindy Hassebroek, Megan Milstead, Dara Hassebroek, Briana (Chris) Behrens, Brady (Kristina) Hassebroek and Trevor (Brittany) Hassebroek; great grandchildren, Austin, Blake, McKenzie, Paige, Colten, Carter; step-grandchildren, Ashley (Aaron) Johnson, Elisha Toutges; step-great grandchildren, Parker, Jessa and Mason; sisters, Grace Russman, Sioux Falls, SD; Margaret Bergman, Little Rock, IA; and Mabel (Harry) Balster, Little Rock, IA; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Waiting to welcome her to Heaven were her husband, John, her parents, Jake and Tena, sisters, Jessie Funk and Fannie Gruis, and brothers Jake and Bill Stratmeier.
