MARY SYBELLA JOHANNING, age 100, of Adrian, died Friday, December 5, 2008, at the Sanford Adrian Care Center. She was born August 25, 1908, on the family farm south of St. Kilian, to Sebastian and Catherine (Kurtenbach) John. Mary graduated from St. Kilian Catholic School. After her mother died, Mary continued living on the farm caring for her father & her siblings. Mary married Raymond Johanning on November 21, 1933, at St. Kilian Catholic Church. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the St. Kilian area. In 1970, they retired and moved to Adrian. Mary was very adventurous in her later years. She rode in a small airplane, a jet ski, and horse drawn wagons. At the age of 99, she even rode on a motorcycle. In January of 2008, Mary became a resident of the Sanford Adrian Care Center. She was a former member of St. Kilian Catholic Church, where she belonged to the Catholic Daughters Court Madonna #839 and the Catholic Aid Society. She was a member of St. Adrian Catholic Church, the WCCW and a volunteer at the Adrian Meal Site. Mary enjoyed crocheting, crafts, quilting, embroidery, flower gardening, shopping, butterflies & especially spending time with her grandchildren & great grandchildren. Mary is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Edwin & Norma Johanning, Worthington, & their four daughters, Karen Honermann, Lori Heglund, Cheryl Kern & Kim Demory; daughter and son-in-law, LaVonne & Jack Slater, Wilmont, & their children, Mark, Michael, Kent & Gary Slater, Natalie Reker, Eileen Heitkamp & Mary Erani; and thirty one great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond, on July 31, 1973; an infant grandson, Carl Slater, in 1965; five brothers; and six sisters.
