Obituary

MERLE ARTHUR MILLER, age 90, of Worthington, died Friday, March 28, 2014 at Minnesota Veteran Home in Luverne. He was born May 10, 1923 in Wellman, IA; to parents Arthur and Anna (Monahan) Miller. Merle graduated from high school and also the University of Iowa. He joined the United States Marine Corp in June of 1942 and received his honorable discharge in January of 1946. Merle began working for J.C. Penney Company in 1948 at Cedar Rapids, IA. He later transferred to Le Mars, IA; Yankton, SD; Lake City, MN; Green Bay, WI; Rock Rapids, IA. He then transferred to Worthington and managed J.C. Penney for twenty three years. Merle worked for JC Penney Company for thirty five years and retired in 1983.
Merle was united in marriage to Goldie M. Kinney on September 17, 1949 in Iowa City, IA. After their marriage, the couple lived in various Cities before moving to Worthington in 1962.
Merle was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church serving as an elder and Clerk of Session. He was past president of noon Kiwanis. He was also a member of the VFW Post 3958 and the American Legion #5, American Cancer Society, a trustee of the Elks Lodge # 2287, chairman of the Nobles County Library Board, volunteer for RSVP and a guide at Pioneer Village. Merle enjoyed being Santa Claus at Pioneer Village, elderly housing and special requests. Merle was also an avid Green Bay Packer fan in a Viking world.
He is survived by his son, Terry (Connie) Miller, Sherman, TX; three grandchildren, Teralee Miller, Ashley West and Aaron West; one great grandchild, Ariana West.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Goldie.
A time of fellowship will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington. The Memorial  Service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Pastor Bonnie Roys officiating. Burial of cremains with full military honors will be at the Worthington Memorial Garden Cemetery.
