MILDRED S. (BROOKS) KLOSTERBUER, age 96, of Luverne, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at the Mary Jane Brown Good Samaritan Home in Luverne. She was born on October 18, 1916 in Magnolia, Minnesota. Mildred was the daughter of Albert and Gesine (Rust) Brooks. She grew up in Magnolia graduating from Magnolia High School in 1934. In 1934-35 she attended Normal School in Luverne and became a teacher at Rock County District 24 from 1934 to1941. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Onno Klosterbuer.
Mildred and Onno were united in marriage on September 20, 1941 at her parent's home in Magnolia. They lived west of Ellsworth and farmed for 43 years. In 1984 they retired and moved into their new home, designed by Onno, in Luverne, Minnesota. Onno passed away April 17, 1990.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Luverne. She was a member of Stateline Presbyterian Church until it closed in 2000. There Mildred served as church treasurer for many years, taught Sunday School, and participated in the UPW Ladies Aid. She was a member of the PTA and Booster Club at Ellsworth while her children attended school there. In Luverne, she enjoyed belonging to several card clubs playing pinochle and 500.
In her early years, Mildred enjoyed gardening and cooking. She took special pride in serving a meal that was completely home grown. She enjoyed learning, reading, playing the piano by ear, jigsaw puzzles, any type of word games or puzzles and was a loyal Minnesota Twins fan, but spending time with family was her most cherished activity.
She moved to Poplar Creek Assisted Living in November 2009, and became a resident of Mary Jane Brown in September 2011. Her ready smile and twinkling blue eyes always welcomed visitors.
Those left to cherish her memory and the many lessons she taught are her children, Jim (Dorothy) Klosterbuer of Cedar Rapids, IA; Shirley Klosterbuer of Luverne, MN; Mary Klosterbuer of Windom, MN; and Don (Lona) Klosterbuer of Luverne, MN. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Sarah Klosterbuer of Eden Prairie, MN; Abby Klosterbuer of St. Paul, MN; and David Klosterbuer of Cedar Rapids, IA; and three sisters, Esther Norberg of Arlington, SD; Beatrice Goembel of Luverne, MN; and Edna Brown of Arlington, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Onno Klosterbuer; and her brother, Robert Brooks.
A time of fellowship will be from 5-8 pm Friday, March 1, 2013, at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Luverne; and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. A memorial service will be 11 am Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Luverne, officiated by Rev. Sarah Butler. Burial of Cremains will be 2 pm Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the Ebenezer Stateline Cemetery in rural Kanaranzi.
