MILO REKER, age 93, of Worthington, died Saturday, October 4, 2014, at Sanford Worthington Medical Center. He was born November 14, 1920, on the family farm east of Lismore, to Fred and Catherine (Kern) Reker. He attended St. Anthony Catholic School in Lismore. Milo worked as a farm hand before entering the service. He served his country in the Merchant Marines during WWII from January of 1942 to May of 1943. After returning from the service, he continued to work as a farm hand.
Milo married Bernadine Probst on January 15, 1945, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, IA. After their marriage, the couple farmed for two years in the Wilmont area before farming for two years in rural Alton, IA. For over seventeen years, they farmed in the Lismore & Adrian area until 1966, when the couple moved to Worthington. Milo worked as a custodian at St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Worthington Medical Center. He also worked at Production Credit Association and UBC in Worthington. Milo also worked at Tom's Car Wash and delivered vehicles for local car dealers.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he sang in the choir, served on the parish council, and ushered for over forty years. Milo volunteered for the Red Cross and RSVP. He was also a member of the Worthington and Round Lake American Legions. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family.
A devoted family man, Milo taught by example, especially in the way he lived his faith. He loved Jesus and the Catholic Church, and embodied the virtues of St. Joseph, modeling a strong work ethic and by being a loving provider for his family.
Milo is survived by his ten children: Sheryl (Gerald) Fritz, Omaha, NE; Glenis (Loren) Marsh, Worthington; David (Gwen) Reker, Sioux Falls, SD; Patricia (John, Hart, Fulda; Steven Reker, Omaha, NE; Paul (Annette) Reker, New Ulm; James Milo (Marian) Reker, Dickinson, ND; Joan Marie (Joe Dietzler) Reker, San Diego, CA; Norma (Greg Bramel) Reker, Little Canada; and Kevin (Nicolle) Reker, Little Canada; nineteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one brother, Ray Reker, Sioux Falls, SD; four sisters-in-law: Betty Reker, Worthington; Anita Reker, Adrian; Rita Reker, St. Cloud; and Marilyn Probst, Des Moines, IA; many nieces & nephews; and Leona Fuerstenberg's family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Bernadine in 1994; two grandchildren, Whitney & William Reker; three sisters: Rosina Reker, Irene Stubbe & Viola Honermann; five brothers: Edwin, Roman, Alvin, Sylvester & Fred Reker; and his special friend, Leona Fuerstenberg.
Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Monday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington; and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Tuesday, October 7 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Worthington, officiated by Fr. James Calahan. Burial with full military honors, provided by the Worthington American Legion & VFW, will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Worthington.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
