Obituary

NORMA E. HERMAN, age 99, of Luverne, died Friday, August 7, 2009, at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills. She was born April 22, 1910, in Beaver Creek Township, to Lee and Nettie (Brooks) English. Norma attended school in Beaver Creek and after three months, she moved to Luverne with her parents who had bought the South Side Dairy. After graduating from Luverne High School, Norma attended Normal School in Luverne took summer sessions at Mankato Teachers College and Sioux Falls College. She taught in Rock County schools until 1940 when she became Deputy Register of Deeds at the Rock County Court House. Norma married Martin Herman on June 23, 1943, in Worthington. After their marriage, the couple moved to Burbank, CA, where they both worked at Lockheed Aircraft until the end of WWII. Norma & Martin returned to Luverne where Martin worked with his brother Fred at Herman Motor Company. Norma then worked as Claims Clerk at Tri-State Insurance from 1945 to 1957. She also worked part time at Renfro Variety Store in Luverne. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Luverne serving in various capacities. Norma always enjoyed meeting the public. She became a resident of the Tuff Memorial Home, in Hills, in 2003. Norma is survived by her nieces & nephews, Caroline (Carl) Hendrickson, Detroit Lakes; Jim (Judy) Herman, Luverne; Rosemary (Leroy) Merkel, Worthington; Dick (Clarice) Herman, Luverne; Jane Nolde, Roseville; Lorraine Kania, Minneapolis; Will (Marlys) Herman, Bloomington; and Maria Nolde, Sierra Vista, AZ; and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Martin, on September 5, 1996; sister, Jesse Harmeyer; and a brother, Chester (Shirley) English.
