NORMAN V. SCHWARZENBACH, age 89, of Worthington, died Monday, November 7, 2011 at the Sanford Hospital in Worthington. He was born on August 6, 1922 at Lake Park, IA to parents, Vern and Celia (Packer) Schwarzenbach. He was baptized, confirmed and was a member of the Lake Park Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon, Elder, and other capacities.
Norman received his education in the Lake Park School system graduating in 1939. He was always interested in sports, played basketball during his High School years and continued playing AAU basketball with the "Black Raiders" until about 1960. When he could no longer actively participate in basketball he did "play-by-play" statistics for numerous high school and Jr. College coaches in Lake Park, Spirit Lake and Worthington, and for major college coaches in Iowa City, Ames, Des Moines and Minneapolis. He charted the Iowa Girls State Tournament in Des Moines from 1980 until 1994.
Norman served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Dickinson-Osceola County Watershed Committee; as director of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association which encompassed three counties; and also served as a member of the Advisory Board for the Estherville Co-op Creamery. Norman farmed the Schwarzenbach farm until 1972 when he semi-retired and raised feeder cattle.
On December 27, 1981 he was united in marriage to Betty Brehmer Holinka in Lake Park, IA. They lived on the Schwarzenbach farm northwest of Lake Park until 1991 when they retired and moved to Worthington, MN. They enjoyed thirty years together.
Norman is survived by his wife Betty, Worthington, MN; children, Thomas R. (Linda) Holinka, Worthington, MN; Diane E. (Eugene) Sanow, Fulda, MN; Barbara A. Staples, Slayton, MN; and David J. (Gail) Holinka, Worthington, MN; ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Alice Schwarzenbach Woodward, Mesa, AZ; Marie Dass, Fulda, MN; and Ann Brehmer, St. James, MN; and many nephews, nieces and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Everett, son, Terry, son, James A. Holinka, son-in-law, Dan Staples and his grandparents.
Visitation will be Friday from 10 to 11 AM at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington.
The Memorial Service will be Friday at 11:00 AM at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington with the Pastor Tom Braun officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Avoca.
