OTIS ELMER HALVERSON Jr., age 74, of Luverne, died Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at the Sanford Luverne Hospital. He was born March 19, 1936, in Kerkhoven, to Otis Sr. and Eleanor (Johnson) Halverson. In November of 1953, Otis enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard and served for two years. He then served his country in the United States Navy before retiring in 1975. Otis married Marion Pappenfus on May 25, 1961, in Northwood, IA. After their marriage, the couple lived in Rhode Island. While Otis served in the military, the couple lived in various places including The Azore Islands during the Cuban Missile Crisis. They moved to Worthing, SD in 1988; and moved to Luverne in 2009. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne; the Luverne VFW; and an at-large member of the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and car rides in the countryside. Otis is survived by his wife, Marion Halverson, Luverne; sister, Ardis Smith, Paynesville; brothers-in-law, George (Celestine) Pappenfus, Becker; John (Ruth) Pappenfus, Royalton; Donald (Diane) Pappenfus, Clear Lake; Leroy (Virginia) Pappenfus, Brandon, SD; and Fred Hansen, South St. Paul; sisters-in-law, Grace Harshman, Princeton; and Irene (Wendell) Hansen, Keokuk, IA; and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his great aunt & uncle, John & Lily Reigstad, who raised Otis when he was a small child.
