PETER J. BIRD, age 78, of Worthington, died Friday, February 28, 2014, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Worthington. He was born March 16, 1935 in Marcus, IA, to Marion and Elaine (Franck) Bird. He graduated from Holy Name Catholic High School in Marcus IA. Peter served his country in the United States Marines from 1953-1956; and the United States Air Force from 1958-1980.
Peter married Lois E. Johnson on August 30, 1957, in Marcus, IA. During Peters twenty five year military career, the couple lived in many different places before retiring and moving to Worthington in 1980. He later worked for Running's in Worthington for over twenty five years.
He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington; and the Worthington VFW. He enjoyed playing softball, golf, darts as well as camping & fishing with his grandchildren.
Peter is survived by his four children, Denise Schreier (Mark Boomgaarden), LeMars, IA; Anita (Brian) Bohn, Mankato, MN; Anthony (Debbie) Bird, Gilbert, AZ; and Todd (Debbie) Bird; Portland, OR; nine grandchildren, Jason (fiancé Meagan) Schreier, Marcus, IA; Jonathan (special friend Amanda) Schreier, Marcus, IA; Eric (Kristin) Schreier, Des Moines, IA; Travis Schreier, Marcus, IA; Dustin (special friend, Taylor) Bohn, Mankato, MN; Tyler Bohn, South Sioux City, NE; Amanda Bohn, Scottsdale, AZ; Kaylee Bird, Gilbert, AZ; and Taylor Bird, Portland, OR; great grandchildren, Gavin Schreier and a new baby boy due in June; two brothers, Jerry (Mary Kay) Bird, Alton, IA; and Larry (Donna) Bird, Marcus, IA; two sisters, Margaret (Ken) Gengler-Kohler, Remsen, IA; and Molly (Roger) Florke, Brookville, KS; and his extended Running's family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois, on January 10, 2006; and a brother, Eddie Bird.
Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Monday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington; and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Funeral will be 10:30 am Tuesday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, in Worthington, officiated by Pastor Roger Mackie. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Worthington.
