PETER CHARLES DeKING JR., age 88, of Luverne, died Sunday April 6, 2014, at the Mary Jane Brown Good Samaritan Center in Luverne He was born April 10, 1925, in Hull, IA., to Peter and Grace (Anema) DeKing. He grew up and attended school in the Canton, SD area.
Peter worked on the family farm as a young man until he was drafted by the U.S. Army during WWII. Peter served his country in the South Pacific in the 6th Infantry Division. After the war had ended and Peter was honorably discharged, he came home and worked on the family farm in rural Rock County. He farmed most of his life and later in life worked for A.R. Woods in Luverne.
He enjoyed fishing and spending time at their place on Lake Shetek. Peter's biggest joy in life was Ham Radio Operating. He helped start the Amateur Radio Club in Luverne, where he was a member for many years.
Peter is survived by four siblings, Wilfred DeKing, Luverne; Leona Twedt, Canton, SD; Gilma (Frank) Brooks, Sioux Falls; Lorena Wojahn, White Bear Lake, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ida, Carol, Gert; and a brother, Richard.
Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Luverne; and also one hour prior to the service at the Dingmann Funeral Home on Thursday. A Memorial Service will be10:30 AM Thursday at Dingmann Funeral Home, in Luverne officiated by Rev. Andrew Palmquist. Burial of Cremains will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
