Obituary

Richard (Dick) William Brake was born at his Grandfather?s farm near Ward Springs, a small community between Sauk Centre and Grey Eagle on October 21, 1929. His parents were William and Lillian (Johnson) Brake. Richard was baptized, made his First Communion and was Confirmed in the Catholic Faith in Ward Springs. When he was 11 years old his parents moved to Little Falls, MN. From there they moved to Wilmont and then to Fulda, MN where he attended High School. During his High School years he lettered in football and basketball, he graduated in 1948. After graduation he attended Lee Barber School in St. Paul, MN. He worked his apprenticeship at Olson Barbershop in Slayton, MN and later joined John Kirk and Bob Lawrence at the Hotel Thompson Barbershop in Worthington, MN. On September 5th, 1950 he married his High School sweetheart?Mary Lou Schindler. After 2 years they moved to Lakefield with their first daughter where Richard continued to barber for 1-1/2 years. They returned to Worthington on October 31st, 1953 and he opened his own barbershop in the Larson Jewelry building on 10th Street. Barbering was his life. He enjoyed going to work each and every day. He celebrated 61 years of barbering with his family and friends. Richard was in the U.S. Navel Reserves from 1951 ? 1955 during the Korean Conflict. He served on the Nobles County Variance Board for many years. He was also very active with the Boy Scouts as a leader and a member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. Richard had a love for golfing, hunting and fishing. He never missed the spring walleye opener. We will always remember him for his sense of humor and witty comments. Richard fought a courageous battle with cancer for a year and a half. He died on December 3rd, 2009 at the Sunset Cottage in Worthington surrounded by his family. Richard is survived by his wife of 59 years; Mary Lou; 5 children, 8 grandchildren; Cindy (Greg) Miller, (Lee and Jessica), Suzanne (Mark) Hagen, (Nicholas), Kristine (Doug) Fransen, (Nathan (Kim) Fransen and Heidi), Mary Beth (Brad) VanderSluis, (Ashley), Richard (Karen) Brake Jr, (Dustin and Kristyn). He is preceded in death by his parents and infant son Michael. A time of gathering will held from 9:30am to 10:30am with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am on December 7th, 2009 at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Worthington. A private family burial will follow at St. Gabriel Catholic Cemetery in Fulda. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
