Obituary

RICHARD BURMEISTER, age 85, of Luverne, died Monday, December 27, 2010, at the Sanford Luverne Hospital. He was born September 1, 1925, in Sherman, SD, to Gustave and Amanda (Paulsen) Burmeister. The family moved to Luverne where Richard went to school completing two years of high school and then started working on the family farm. In January of 1946 Richard was drafted into the U.S. Army and did his basic training at Fort Valmor, Virginia. He was stationed in the Hawaiian Islands until he was honorably discharged in May of 1947. He returned to Luverne and rented a farm south of town farming and doing custom silo filling and custom hay and corn stalk baling. In 1949 he rented a farm in Mound Township where he farmed the rest of his life. Richard married Betty Mayer on January 24, 1953, at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. He was a member of St. Catherine?s Catholic Church and a past member of the Luverne VFW. He was a 4-H leader and helped organize the Rock County Pork Producers where he served as its first president. Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, gardening, bus trips, and spending time with his family. Richard is survived by his wife Betty, Luverne; two sons, Glenn and Julie Burmeister, Luverne; Kurt and Kari Burmeister, Luverne; three daughters, Denise Nepp, Windom; Darcy and Tom Roscoe, Big Stone City, SD; Rhonda and Steve Brenneke, Olivenhain, CA; twelve grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; brother Wayne Burmeister, Slayton; three sisters, Elaine Jensen and Darlene Johnson, both of Minneapolis; Arlene Mann, Luverne. He was preceded in death by his parents and son in law, Shawn Wambach.
