Obituary

Richard "Rick" Eggleston UTCS Navy "Seabees" Retired Rick, 63, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA He was born on February 20, 1946, in Worthington, MN. to Glen and Margaret (Rohwedder) Eggleston, one of eight children. He married Dottie (Gustafson) Eggleston in Omaha, NE on December 14, 1974. He re-entered the military service in December 1974 and retired on February 28, 1991. His first enlistment duty stations were at NAS Cecil Field, Fl; and Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 8, Davisville, RI; with two tours in Vietnam. His second enlistment duty stations included NAS Midway Island; Naval Communication Station, Honolulu, HI; Naval Construction Training Center, Gulfport, MS; and Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 1, Gulfport, MS. During his enlistment his many awards and medals included the Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Medal, Navy "E", Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 campaign stars and Fleet Marine Combat Insignia, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Sea Service Deployment and Navy/Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbons, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citations, and Good Conduct Awards. After his retirement from the military in 1991, Rick worked as a Quality Control/Safety Inspector with government contractors in Oakland, CA; Merced, CA; Vacaville, CA; Whidbey Island, WA; and finally at Ft. Lewis Army Base, Tacoma, WA. Due to health issues he became a man of leisure, traveled, enjoyed life and entertained himself at home for the past few years. Rick is survived by his wife of 34 years, Dottie, Lacey, WA; daughter Kelly (Brett) Vicker of Omaha, NE; sisters Dorothy (Ray) Hindt of Council Bluffs, IA; Pat (Bud) Henderschiedt of Worthington, MN; Marcy (Gerald) Allred of Des Moines, IA; brother Bill Eggleston of Manchester, NH; and grandchildren Jordin, Sarah and Mason. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Glen, Wayne and Tim. Rick touched many lives and will be sadly missed by his many relatives and friends. He was a teller of story and entertained many at length. His favorite pastimes were working in his garden and yard, fishing, working on his model railroad, rebuilding his motorcycle and he had a love of music. A memorial was held on March 28, 2009, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, Olympia, WA, with the Naval Honor Guard. "Every morning, I thank my God for having been born in this great nation, with its many freedoms and opportunities, for having been able to serve my country honorably, and for having been able to be a positive influence in some peoples lives."
