RICHARD L. SUNDTROM, also known as JAY JACKSON, age 77, of Ellsworth, formerly of Luverne, died Saturday, February 21, 2009, at his home. He was born December 26, 1931, in Cokato, to Roy E. and Vera (Lhotka) Sundsrom. He graduated from South High School in Minneapolis. Richard entered the United States Marines and served his country during The Korean Conflict. After returning from the service, he attended and graduated from Brown Institute of Broadcasting in Minneapolis. Richard became a radio broadcaster working in various cities including Watertown, SD, WNAX , in Yankton, SD, KJAM, in Jamestown, ND, KXRV, in Sioux Falls, SD, and finally at K101, in Luverne, for the last nineteen years. Richard married Kay Stewart on December 26, 1974, in Sioux Falls, SD. After their marriage the couple lived in Yankton, SD, before moving to Luverne in 1990. Over the years Richard & Kay worked as partners in radio production. They worked hand in hand and won several awards in radio broadcasting. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church. Richard is survived by his wife, Kay Sundstrom, Ellsworth; daughter, Nancy Sundstrom, Minneapolis; step son, Mike (Lindsey) Champion, Suwannee, GA; step daughter, Liz (Glen) Anderson, Sisseton, SD; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; he was blessed with a wonderful brother, Ken (Pat) Sundstrom, Coon Rapids; many nieces & nephews; and a special companion, Zoe. He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother. A memorial service will be 2 PM Sunday at the Dingmann Funeral Home, in Luverne, officiated by Rev. Donn Rakow. A private burial will be at a later date at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.
