OBITUARY: ROBERT R. JANS The family and friends of Robert ?Bob? R. Jans are celebrating the life of a good Christian man who loved his family, his community, a little travel, a good joke, and the tug of a bluegill on the end of his line. Bob?s love of family started early: he was born in 1920 into the company of four sisters and six brothers, in the town of Slayton and the home of Rimer and Agnes Jans. At the age of 11, the death of his father caused Bob to move in with an older sister and her husband who lived in Fulda and did not have children of their own. He later moved with his sister and brother-in-law to Brewster in 1934, and though his next and last move was much later on?1970, to be precise?and only took him as far as Worthington, he had gotten a taste for travel. In 1937, Bob caught the attention of a Worthington spitfire named Eleanore Anderson and married on September 28th, 1941.Bob began his life as a family man farming in Brewster, growing corn, cows, chickens, and daughters. He often told of a time during those years when he was confined to bed following a surgery, and glowed with pride at the memory of his four daughters keeping the farm going while he recovered?Bonnie did the housework, Karen milked the cows, Bobette tended the chickens, and JoAnn tended Bob. (Eleanore could be found in the fields running the big equipment.) Though life would bring challenges and sad times in the years ahead, Bob would never lose his faith, his appreciation of the little things, his easy smile, and his ability to crack a joke. After their girls were grown and raising families of their own, Bob and Eleanore moved to Worthington in 1970 and served as resident caretakers at the Atrium. During these years, Bob and Eleanore traveled all over the country, including Hawaii, Washington D.C., and Colorado, and Bob found many opportunities to go fishing. Bob volunteered and served on boards for many years at the First Covenant Church, with local 4H, and the Lorain Township. When he retired from the Atrium, Bob and Eleanore continued their volunteer work and purchased a home in Worthington. Bob enjoyed working part-time in retirement at Lambert Lumber and Dingmann Funeral Home. The twosome later shared rooms at Golden Horizons and the South Shore Care Center. Eleanore went home to be with Jesus on August 25th last year, and Bob is now in the company of his sweetheart and his Savior?those that loved him can?t help but be happy for him. Bob is survived by daughters Karen Roth, Eagan, and Bobette (Garvin) Pronk, Rochester; grandchildren Kirt Schmitz, Jandalyn Schmitz, Brandon Roth, Damon (Alyson) Roth, Gwen (Ken)Stevens, Bryce (Sara) Pronk, Robert (Nichole) Datzman, Jaime Datzman, and Tyler Datzman; great-grandchildren Kendra, Kayla, and Karisa Stevens, and Bennett and Alexis Pronk; sister-in-law, Dorathy Jordahl; and son-in-law Joe Datzman. Bob was preceded in death by his parents;daughters Bondalyn Schmitz and JoAnn Datzman; sons-in-law Merle Schmitz and Don Roth; and siblings Frank, William, Elsie, Dorothy, Rudolph, Lydia, Allen, Clarence, Arnold, and Bernice.
