Obituary

SARA MAY WHARTON, age 95, of Luverne, died Friday, September 17, 2010, at the Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne. She was born February 4, 1915, in rural Luverne, to Floyd and Sara Mary (Thomas) Norton. She attended grade school at District #6 Country School in rural Luverne. May graduated from Luverne High School 1933. She furthered her education with Normal Training to become a teacher and taught at several country schools. May married Everett Wharton on March 9, 1940, in Luverne. After their marriage, the couple farmed northwest of Luverne. They farmed there for twenty-two years. The family moved to an acreage southwest of Luverne in 1963. Everett helped in farming and later became the ?Culligan Man?. In 1997, they moved to the Centennial Apartments in Luverne. Everett died in May of 2002. She was a very energetic person. During her younger farm life days, she grew a large garden and filled ?the celler? with row after row of canned goods. Making lunches (morning, noon & afternoon) for ?the men?, neighbors helping during harvest season, also kept her busy. Church has always been important in her life. She is a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church in Luverne. During those years, she was a Sunday School teacher and a member and officer of the Women?s Missionary Society. May was active with Senior Focus Bible Study Group. Farming ?tied them down?, but they still found time to do some traveling. They often made weekend visits into South Dakota to visit relatives. They made numerous trips to Michigan to visit Everett?s brother and his family sometimes driving, sometimes flying. Some of May?s most memorable trips were to visit her daughter in Georgia, especially the trip for Virginia and John?s wedding. May was a member of the Rock County Senior Citizens where she enjoyed playing Bingo & Skipko. She loved earning a Blue Ribbon for her flowers at this years county fair. In February of 2008, she became a resident of the Mary Jane Brown Home. May is survived by her son, Robert Wharton, Luverne; daughter, Virginia (John) Allen, Luverne; sister, Marguerite Hoh, Luverne; sister-in-law, Lorna Wharton, Glenwood; and brother-in-law, Eugene Wharton, Pawpaw, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Everett; brother, Robert Norton; and two sisters-in-law, Eva Moerke and Dorine Wharton and three brothers-in-law, Barney Hoh, Dick Moerke and Ervin Wharton.
