SHIRLEY ANN DEBATES, age 73, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Luverne, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. She was born November 27, 1935, in Centerville, SD, to Walter and Doris (Middlen) Yager. She worked at the Adrian Bank after she graduated high school. She was united in marriage to Duwayne DeBates on June 4, 1957, at St. Mary?s Catholic Church, in Ellsworth. After their marriage they made their home in Kanaranzi. She volunteered as an organist at St. Catherine?s Catholic Church in Luverne where she played at many weddings and funerals for over thirty five years and also received the Bishops Medal for her thirty-five years of outstanding ministry in the church. Shirley also worked at the Luverne Schools as a lunch lady. She taught piano lessons to young students for many years. She lived in Luverne until 2004 when she moved to Sioux Falls to be near her family. She worked at St. Mary?s School in Sioux Falls and continued to teach piano until her illness caused her to retire. She was a member of St. Catherine?s Catholic Church. She was active in Kanaranzi, Ladies Aide, Lions Club, and the Pink Ladies. She enjoyed knitting and making caps for Project Linus, crossword puzzles, and reading. She enjoyed spending time with her family especially her summers with the family at the lake cabin on Lake Minnewaska. Shirley is survived by her four children, Tom (Kristen) DeBates, Atlanta, GA; Jill (Steve) Sudenga, Sioux Falls, SD; Scott (Ginny) DeBates, Gretna, NE; Timothy DeBates, Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren, sister, Marjorie Wendt, Worthington; brother, Paul Yager, Eden Prairie, MN She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Duwayne in 1980, two infant children, Mark and Sara, sister, Mary Patten.
