TOM R. ENGELKES, age 75, of Rushmore, died Sunday, December 15, 2013, at the Sanford Worthington Medical Center. He was born October 14, 1938, in Worthington, to Omke and Elizabeth (Graven) Engelkes. He graduated from Worthington High School in 1957.
Tom married Arla DeVries on July 23, 1961, at the First Presbyterian Church in Rushmore. The couple farmed near Rushmore. Tom also worked at the Bigelow Farmers Elevator, Cargill, Burns Body Shop in Worthington, Gary's Electric in Rushmore, and the 1st Shift in Maintenance at Swift in Worthington.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rushmore, the Rushmore Booster Club, a Firearms Safety Instructor for thirty seven years and a 4-H Leader for thirty eight years. Tom enjoyed his horses, especially Big Bud; fishing, snowmobiling, hunting, stock cows, calves, auto racing, camping, tractor pulls, going to We Fest, watching WWE Wrestling and his John Deere tractors. The joy of his life was his grandchildren & great grandchildren; and attending their activities including, softball, little league & T-ball.
Tom is survived by his wife, Arla Engelkes, Rushmore; two daughters, Brenda (Larry) Groenewold, Rushmore; and Sandra (Matthew) Brandt, Hartford, SD; five grandchildren, Daniel (Jennifer) Groenewold, Bobby (Amanda Reisdorfer) Groenewold, Sadie (Craig) Correll, Jessica Brandt & Emily Brandt; four great grandchildren, Izaiah, Ryan, Tyler & Alexa; two sisters, Darlene Alberts, Rushmore; and Leona (James) Peterson, Eagle Grove, IA; and many nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; great granddaughter, Brooke Groenewold; brother-in-law, Marvin Alberts; and a niece, Cindy Metz.
Visitation will be from 5-7pm Wednesday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington; and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Funeral will be 10:30 am Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, in Rushmore, officiated Pastor Jim Krapf. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Rushmore.
