TORLEIF JOHAN THOMPSON, age 85, of Luverne, died Monday, November 25, 2013, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne. He was born September 30, 1928, in Luverne, to Sivert and Lina (Snartemo) Thompson. He graduated from Luverne High School in 1946.
Torleif married Arlene Gradert on August 26, 1951, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Luverne. After their marriage, the couple moved to the family farm southeast of Luverne. In 1989, they moved to Luverne and retired from farming in 1992.
He was a former member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church where he was baptized & confirmed; a current member of Grace Lutheran Church; past member of the Magnolia Township Board; Director on the Magnolia Farmers Coop Elevator Board; and was honored to have earned his membership to the "Kompen Cottage". Torleif loved farming. He lived on the home farm for over sixty one years. He was proud of his Norwegian Heritage. Torleif was almost able to convert his wife, Arlene from German to Norwegian. He enjoyed dancing, farming and traveled to Norway four different times.
Torleif is survived by his four children, Warren (Cleone) Thompson, Baltic, SD; Diane (John) Schullo, Bloomington; Jean (Jim) Noonan, Richfield; and Wayne (Mary) Thompson, Luverne; eight grandchildren, Jessy (Eric) Jex, Josh Noonan, Jordan Noonan, Jamie Noonan, Jared Noonan, Courtney (Andrew) DeBoer, Nathan Thompson & Brooke Thompson; a sister, Tanya (Gary) Lehmann, Oconomowoc, WI; and a brother, Stan Thompson, Coon Rapids..
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Arlene, on July 16, 2011; and a grandson, Aaron Thompson, on May 19, 2011.
Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Thursday at the Dingmann Funeral Home, in Luverne; and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Funeral will be 10:30 am Friday at the Grace Lutheran Church, in Luverne, officiated by Rev. Josh Ednerson. Burial will be in the Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
Memorials are preferred to the Luverne Hospice Cottage.
