VERNIS MARCEIL DeJAGER, age 89, of Dilworth, formerly of rural Rushmore, died Friday, May 9, 2008, at the Serenity Assisted Living Center, in Dilworth, MN. She was born November 17, 1918, in rural Nobles County, to Henry and Esther (Sorenson) Johnson. She attended McKinley School, rural Nobles Co., Dist. #20. Vernis married Albert DeJager on November 22, 1937, in Rushmore. After their marriage, the couple farmed south of Rushmore. They retired in 1978; and moved to the Meadows, in Worthington, in 1995. The couple moved to Moorhead in 1997 to be close to their daughter, Karen, & her husband, Greg. In October of 2006, Vernis was very blessed to enter her final journey at the Serenity Assisted Living Center, in Dilworth. She was also fortunate to be cared for by the Red River Valley Hospice. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, in Sibley, IA. Vernis enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and working side by side with her husband on the farm. She loved crocheting, sewing & quilting. Vernis made each of her children & grandchildren a hand sewn double wedding ring quilt. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren. Vernis is survived by her four daughters & sons-in-law, Karen & Greg Frey, Moorhead; Muriel & Edward Tholen, rural Rushmore; Marceil & Winston Edson, Cedar Rapids, IA; and Carol & Johnnie Webb, Moore, OK; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert, on April 6, 2002; a grandson; and a brother, Marlis Johnson.
