Obituary

WILFRED P. ?FREDDIE? WINTER, age 88, of Adrian, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne. He was born January 31, 1921, in Adrian, to Stephen and Veronica (Scheidt) Winter. Wilfred graduated from St. Adrian Catholic High School. He entered the United States Navy on August 17, 1942, in San Diego, CA. He served his country during WWII before being discharged on October 7, 1945. Wilfred married Madelyn Owens on November 23, 1944, at St. Adrian Catholic Church. After their marriage, the couple lived in Florida while Wilfred was in the service. After his discharge, the couple moved to Adrian. Wilfred was a United States rural letter carrier for over thirty years before retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Adrian Catholic Church; a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, where he had served as Grand Knight, District Deputy & on the State Scholarship Committee; the National Rural Letter Carrier Association; and the Adrian Senior Citizens. He enjoyed golf, volunteering, woodworking, all of his years in the Knights of Columbus & the song Deep Purple. Wilfred is survived by his six children, Peggy (Ed) Smith, Allen, TX; Steve (Carol) Winter, Sioux City, IA; Mark (Elaine) Winter, Mound; Jim (Chris) Winter, Coeur d ?Alene, ID; Jean (Jim Heimbach) Winter, Coeur d ?Alene, ID; and Becky Winter-Schaller, Onalaska, WI; daughter-in-law, Suzanne Winter, New Hope; fifteen grandchildren, Carmon (Sean) Schaeffer, Grady (Renee) Smith, Bart (Anne) Winter, Jason (Fianc?e, Amanda) Winter, Casey Winter, Marvin Schaller, Darin Smith, Ryan (Sonya) Winter, Jeff (Ellen) Winter, Sam Winter, Molly Schaller, Riley Smith, Leah Winter, Mitchell Schaller and Mariah Schaller; ten great grandchildren, Mackenzie Walker; Jacob, Matthew, Jillian, Alexis & Kaden Smith; Gabriella & Pierce Schaffer; and Kaylee & Emily Winter; sister, Mary Ann (Florian) Loosbrock, Lismore; sister-in-law, Vaughn Winter, Adrian; brother-in-law, Marvin Owens, Luverne; and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Madelyn, on June 2, 2004; son, Bill, in August of 2003; and three brothers, Edmund, Orville & Virgil Winter. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Adrian Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund, 512 Maine Ave. Adrian, MN 56110.lle & Virgil Winter.
