David Dean Smedsrud

    DAVID “SMITTY” SMEDSRUD, age 77, of Luverne, died Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at his home in Luverne. He was born July 2, 1946, in Hills, MN, to Earl and Eldena (Cross) Smedsrud. David grew up and attended school in Hills. 

   David worked for Luverne Bumper where he met his first wife, Laurie. They lived in Luverne where they raised their only child, Kellie. The couple divorced later. He worked for IBP for many years, Post Office and HSI in his later years. David married Virginia, in 1984, in Luverne. She died April 27, 2005. 

   He always enjoyed his classic cars. He often went to car shows where he would show his 1946 and 1960 Chevys and his Corvette. He enjoyed collecting Hills memorabilia, traveling with Virginia, especially the Black Hills for the motorcycle and Corvette rallies, where they would take their VW Trike or Corvette. Later in life, he enjoyed coffee at McDonalds and his usual stop at the Howling Dog for a pop and visit. He was an avid Vikings and Twins fan. You would often see Smitty on a slow daily cruise around town.

  David is survived by his daughter, Kellie (Kelly) Pickner, Springfield, SD; grandson, Kody Pickner, Springfield, SD; six siblings, Keith Smedsrud, Luverne; Eileen Siebenahler, Luverne; Evonne (Al) Meinerts, Luverne; Ellen (Monte) Barton, Luverne; Dale Smedsrud, Luverne; and Dwight Smedsrud, Luverne; and many nieces and nephews.

   He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia; a brother, Jim Smedsrud; and a sister, Elaine Predmore.

  A gathering of friends and family will be from 4-7pm Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Luverne.

   A private burial of cremains will be at a later date.
