GILBERT WARREN CORBIN, age 93, of Leota, died Thursday, October 29, 2015, at the Hospice House in Pipestone. He was born October 15, 1922, in Chicago, Illinois to William Earl and Irene Marie Eugenia (Marzan) Corbin. He lived the first six years of his life in Chicago. Following the death of his father, he moved with his mother, two brothers, and sister to Westfield, North Dakota. Gilbert attended schools in Chicago and Westfield. He worked for various farmers doing odd jobs, often for room and board.
At the age of sixteen, with the help of a Westfield minister, Gilbert moved to the Leota, Minnesota area to work on a farm. He settled in the community and worked at various jobs.
Gilbert was united in marriage to Bertha Koelewyn on May 3, 1942, at the Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Leota. They were blessed with five children.
Following their marriage, the couple lived and farmed near Leota. After retirement they moved to Leota and later moved to the Edgebrook Apartments and then to the Edgebrook Assisted Living apartments in Edgerton. After he was diagnosed with cancer he moved to the Hospice House in Pipestone.
Gilbert farmed and also did many various other jobs. He enjoyed wood working and other crafts that he and Bertha did together after they retired. He had a great sense of humor. His main passion was his family.
Gilbert is lovingly remembered by three children, Bonnie (Garvin) Vis, Leota MN; Rod (Ruth) Corbin, Edgerton MN; and Glenna (Jeff) Backer, Pipestone MN; nine grandchildren, Todd (Julie) Vis, Melanie Vis, Tricia (Steve) Salisbury, April (Grant) Post, Missy (Dave) Mulder, Tami (A.J.) Nelson, Kent (Brandi) Corbin, Rachelle Backer and Trevor Corbin; fourteen great-grandchildren; three siblings, Betty Wiekeraad, Leota MN; Richard (Johanna) Pool, Bellflower CA; Marjorie Roberts, Dallas WI; sister-in-law’s, Elvira Corbin, Edgerton MN; and Maggie Pool, CA.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Bertha Corbin on January 10, 2015; two sons, Garvin Corbin (1943-1959) and Curtis Corbin (1952-2008); a granddaughter, Katy Corbin; his parents; brothers, Earl Corbin, Ralph Corbin, Duane Pool, and Harry Pool.
Visitation will be from 2-4 pm Sunday at the Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Leota. Funeral will be 10:30 am Monday at the Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Leota. Burial will be in the Leota Community Cemetery in Leota.
The Leota Burial Association and Dingmann Funeral Home, in Adrian, are in charge of arrangements.
