Joyce Burk Obituary

   Joyce Floraine Burk, age 93, Worthington, formerly of Rushmore, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington.
   She was born on November 29, 1929 in Wilmont, Minnesota to Louis and Minnie (Elsing) Ebeling. She was baptized in the Christian faith on May 11, 1930 at East Friesland Church in Rushmore.
   She attended country school (District 94) north east of Rushmore until 1939 when her family moved to Bigelow.  She continued her education in Bigelow and later attended Worthington High School, graduating in 1947.  She then enrolled, and completed her training, at the School of Cosmetology in Sioux City, IA in 1948 and went to work at a Salon in Sanborn, IA.  A short while after her employment began, Joyce left her occupation and embarked for Minneapolis with family members to aide her brother Arvid, who having been stricken with polio, was  hospitalized there.    
   Upon her brothers recovery and release from the hospital, Joyce returned home and married William Burk, Jr. on November 29, 1949 in Rushmore Minnesota. The couple farmed a short time before moving into the town of Rushmore.  
   Joyce owned and operated “Burk’s Cafe” in Rushmore for 13 years (1964-1977). She worked other various jobs after selling the café. Michaels and Burkes in the Worthington Mall, the Country Kitchen and the Worthington Daily Globe.  
   Joyce was a former member of East Friesland Church of Christ in Rushmore, The Dorcas Society, the Rushmore American Legion Auxiliary, the Rushmore Senior Citizens and the Elks in Worthington.  
   Joyce enjoyed life !! Dancing at the Worthington Coliseum was Joyce & Bill’s passion. She loved playing games and cards and was somewhat competitive.  She enjoyed bowling and golfing.  She will be remembered for many things including her “hamburger gravy” and “sugar cookies.”
   Joyce is survived by her two children, Steve Burk, Belle Fourche, SD; and Mavis (Dan) Lohre, Forest Lake, MN; four grandchildren and spouses and eight great-grandchildren, Michael (Heather) Burk, Hannah & Ella, Shane (Sarah) Lohre, Donovan (Van) & Liberty (Libby), Grant Lohre, Mark (Sienna) Crew, Lake, Jack and Tripp; sister-in-law, Judy Ebeling; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Jr, on March 5, 1998; and one brother, Arvid Ebeling.

   Visitation will be Tuesday, March 7, from 10 to 11 am at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington. Funeral will be 11 am Tuesday at the Dingmann Funeral Home, in Worthington, officiated by Pastor John Nau. Burial will be 1 pm Wednesday in the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
