Konrad Eidahl Obituary

KONRAD ORLAN EIDAHL, age 86, of Luverne, died peacefully on the morning of Saturday, December 12, 2020, at Crossroads Care Center in Worthington, MN. He was born on January 31, 1934 in Leland, IA to Kenneth and Mabel (Knutson) Eidahl. Konrad attended school in Lake Mills, IA before graduating from Albert Lea High School. He went on to earn an education degree from Luther College and upon graduation was drafted into the United States Army. He served two years as a medical technician and played the French horn in the Army band in Europe before being honorably discharged.

In 1958 Konrad took his first teaching job in Clarkfield, MN. While there, he met and fell in love with Barbara Potter, a fellow teacher. They were married on September 3, 1961. A few years later, the couple moved to Luverne, where Konrad taught sixth-grade. Together they had four children, who were the center of their lives. Quick with a smile, Konrad taught his children right from wrong, often saying, “if you have nothing nice to say about someone, don’t say anything at all.” His children remember him warmly as a loving dad, coach, mentor and friend.

He was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne, where he served as an elder, deacon, usher and was president of the congregation in the late 1980s. Konrad was also a member of the Lions Club, the National Education Association and the Minnesota Education Association. In addition to teaching, he coached several sports, and enjoyed keeping statistics for the Luverne High School basketball team.

Konrad’s hobbies included playing Stratomatic baseball and couple’s bridge. He loved sports, music and travel. One of his favorite memories was going to Game Six of the 1991 World Series and watching the Twins win. For many years he worked every other Sunday as a DJ at KQAD in Luverne, oftentimes using the catchphrase “Kon on Q”. Konrad retired from Luverne Public Schools in 1992, after teaching for 34 years.

His first wife Barbara passed away in 1996. A few years later, he married his second wife Javonne Vermedahl. The couple lived in Emmons, MN until Javonne’s death last year.

Konrad will be dearly missed by his three children, Kyle (Carol) Eidahl of Tallahassee, FL; Pam Christensen of Luverne; and David (Lynn) Eidahl of Delano, MN; eight grandchildren, Daniel Mann, Jessica (Lance) Amato, Cara (Justin) Muth, Stephanie (Tim) Connell, Matt Christensen, Cody Christensen, Marcus Eidahl and Christian Eidahl; three great-grandchildren, Trace Amato; and Scarlett and Merrick Muth; a sister, Kate Hermanson and a brother-in-law, Richard Ferguson, both of Owatonna, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Mabel Eidahl; his first wife Barbara in 1996 and second wife Javonne in 2019; his son, Mark Eidahl in 1991; his son-in-law, Tim Christensen in 2017; and sister, Marcia Ferguson in 2019.

A memorial service will be Friday, July 16, at 10:30 am at Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne.
