Merle Klosterbuer, age 73, of Worthington, died Monday, October 26, 2020, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. He was born on November 9, 1946, to Martin and Viola (Garrels) Klosterbuer, in Luverne. Merle attended Country School through the third grade, then transferring to Ellsworth School, graduating in 1965. During high school, he worked for farmers and the Kanaranzi Elevator. After graduation, he began working for the Ellsworth Lumber Yard and evenings at Kloosters Garage. Merle played a lot of Fast Pitch softball during those years. He was remembered for his pitching. He also loved to go hunting around Luverne, in Idaho and other areas out west.
Merle married Joyce Kooiman on July 14, 1973, in Luverne. The couple moved to Worthington, where Merle began working for Johnson Construction, and later Campbell Construction. He started his own business Klosterbuer Construction in 1984.
He was a member of the American Reformed Church, in Worthington, where he served on some committees and running the sound system at church. When the boys were growing up, he helped as an assistant hockey coach. Merle never missed a game, for either one or the other. He always supported and helped his wife when she was with the Red Cross, taking her to fires in the middle of the night. In 2009, he was the Volunteer of the Year for helping his wife. When Joyce became involved in Operation Christmas Child, Merle was always there to help where needed. One of his greatest joys was going to grandchildren events, and was interested in their hunting.
