Obed Velasco Obituary

OBED VELASCO, age 59, of St. James, formerly of Worthington, died Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at the Mayo Clinic in Mankato. He was born March 21, 1961, in San Andres, Veracruz, MX, to Saulo and Sylvia (Ruiz) Velasco.

Obed married Dora Elia Guillen on July 25, 1981, in San Benito, TX. The couple lived in Texas before moving to St. James in 2005. Amongst having many jobs, Obed had recently begun his own business as a carpenter.

He was a member of Tabernaculo de Alabanza Church. Obed, since youth, helped his father Saulo Velasco build and grow his church and many others. He enjoyed reading the word of God, memorizing chapters of the Bible passionately, spending time with family, playing guitar, writing songs, and carpentry. If you were ever around Ovee, you knew his smile and love was contagious and genuine. It didn’t matter what situation he was in, he would always be saying “Thank You, JESUS!” He was a singer, writer, psalmist, levite, preacher, pastor, youth leader, musician, teacher, carpenter, plumber, legend and everyone’s hero. His favorite quote was, “Sure!”

Obed’s first love was God. No matter where he was, he was carrying around his recorder or his note cards to help memorize the Word. His second love was and will always be his wife, Dora. Obed was about to celebrate his 40 year anniversary with his loving wife Dora. The entire family knew that our beloved Obed was ready to go home with the Lord and we know that he is singing praises alongside the Salmista David.

Obed is survived by his wife, Dora Elia Velasco, St. James; five children, Jessica (Loddy Thepmontry) Velasco, Worthington; Jake (Patty) Velasco, Worthington; Marlen Velasco, St. James; Tiffany (Mario Garcia) Velasco, St. James; and Tommy Velasco, St. James; sixteen grandchildren, Loddy Jr, Saleen, Cristian Kai, Kain & Jocelyn Thepmontry; Mara, Mia & Jake Jr. Velasco; Jade, Murai & Kaleia Velasco; Kiana Chacon, Melody & Anthony Garcia; and Zoe & Artyom Velasco; his parents, Saulo and Sylvia Velasco, San Benito, TX; two brothers, Samuel (Norma) Velasco, San Benito, TX and Omar (Linda) Velasco, San Benito, TX; and three sisters, Noemi (Raul) Rodriguez, St. James; Baslut (Neftali) Grajales, San Benito, TX; and Patty (Abraham) Cobaxin, San Benito, TX.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mara Elia Velasco in 1997.
