PETER GRONEWOLD, age 88, of Luverne, formerly of Round Lake, died Wednesday, January 22, 2020, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne. He was born July 1, 1931, on the family farm near Magnolia, to Peter and Grace (Donker) Gronewold. He attended school in Worthington.
Pete married Rosie Snelson on June 10, 1951, at the Mission Baptist Church in Worthington. He entered the United States Army in 1952. Pete served his country during the Korean Conflict in the 3rd Division 65th Infantry Heavy Motor Co. He was honorably discharged in 1954. After returning from the service, the couple lived in Round Lake for over forty two years. Pete worked as a painter. They later moved to the Ellsworth and Luverne areas. Pete became a resident of the Minnesota Veterans Home in January of 2018.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, in Round Lake; the Round Lake American Legion; and the Worthington VFW. He enjoyed fishing, wood working and making presents for his grandchildren. He loved mom and all his family unconditionally. There was a very special place in his heart for each of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rides on his power chair for the great-grandchildren was his specialty, the faster the better. He loved to make people laugh and give them a hard time, if you could take it, let the games begin. If not the more fun he had.
Pete is survived by his wife, Rosie Gronewold, Luverne; six children, Deb (Dale) Hartle, Watertown, SD; Jim (Rhonda Faye) Gronewold, Wray, CO; Sue (David) Stahl, Sun City, CA; Dona Hromatko, Milford, IA; Rhonda (Dennis) Damm, Okabena; and Randy (Lisa) Gronewold, Maplewood; fourteen grandchildren, Danielle (Chad) Howard, Darren Hartle, Rachel Willard, Jessica (Brandon) Horning, Phillip (Sarah) Gronewold, Dawn (Dave) Rowley, Jeremy (Mindy) Stahl, Jamie (Kizze) Hromatko, Trisha (Jeremy) Neppl, Christopher (Ashley) Hromatko, Melanie (Tom) Krumbach, John (Tabitha) Damm, Justin Gronewold and Emily Gronewold; and twenty three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Steve Hromatko; an infant grandson, Peter (Little Pete) Gronewold; two brothers, Heye and John Gronewold; and a sister, Angeline Peterson.
A memorial service will be at 11 am Saturday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington. A time of fellowship will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday. A private family burial of cremains will take place at a later date.
