Rodney Duane Groenewold, age 81, of Lismore, died on Thursday, January 27, 2022 peacefully at the Sunset Cottage in Worthington, Minnesota. He was born on January, 30, 1940 to Carl and Ella (Hilfers) Groenewold in Adrian, Minnesota. He attended Country School until 8th grade, graduating from Worthington High School in 1957.
Rodney was united in marriage to Delores Drost in 1960. The couple made their home in Rushmore until Rodney joined the Army Reserves, serving for 6 years. Rodney worked at Farington’s in Worthington and the First State Bank of Rushmore. In 1962 the couple moved to their farm near Wilmont. Rodney farmed and served as the Treasurer for Larkin Township for 25 years. After his retirement from farming Rodney was a crop adjuster, both independently as well as working for NAU.
He was a member of 1st Presbyterian Church in Rushmore until 1996 when they transferred their membership to the American Reformed Church in Worthington. Rodney found profound pleasure in his girls, grandchildren and great grandchildren; never missing a chance to attend a sporting event, concert or recital. Rodney loved fishing, spring car races, snowmobiling, morning coffee with the neighbors and countless card games with friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Cheryl (Jeff) Minton of Estherville, Iowa and Charlene (Mike) Meyeraan of Hitterdal, Minnesota. Grandchildren Dustin (Cassie) Wagley of Jackson, Amanda (Brent) Harris of Lake Park, Iowa, Carlee (Steve) Moe of Osage, Minnesota, Trevor (Sam) Meyeraan of Pelican Rapids and Tyler (MacKensie) Meyeraan of Lake Park, Minnesota. His great grandchildren Ella, Maddie, Hudson, Lidia and Ivy – along with two great grands soon to be making their debut. Rodney’s sister Marlene (Don) Rabenberg of Wilmont, In-Laws Sharon (Dennis) Wessels of Balaton, Marcia (Harvey) VanRuler of Rushmore, Linda (Steve) Verdoorn of Mooresville NC, Garry (Gin) Drost of Rushmore, Verlis Drost of Rushmore, Lisa (Duane) Drost of Sibley, Iowa and someone more special than a brother-in-law Larry (Twyla) Rasmussen of Phoenix, Arizona -- along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years Delores, his parents Carl and Ella Groenewold, infant brother Ronald Groenewold. Blessed be the memory of Rodney.
A Memorial Service will be 2 pm Tuesday at the Dingmann Funeral Home, in Worthington, officiated by Deacon Vern Behrends. A time of fellowship will be from noon to 2 pm Tuesday at the Dingmann Funeral Home. A private family burial of cremains will take place at a later date.
