VIRGIL DAVID COOK, age 76, of Adrian, died Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Sioux Falls. He was born February 7, 1944, in Adrian, to Lawrence and Bernice (Wieneke) Cook. Virgil graduated from St. Adrian Catholic High School in 1962. He served his country in the Minnesota Army National Guard’s.
Virgil married Alice Honermann on November 27, 1965, at St. Adrian Catholic Church. The couple farmed on the Cook family farm, northeast of Adrian, where they raised and milked dairy cows. They retired and moved into Adrian in 1994. Virgil cherished the years he spent working as a custodian at the Arnold Memorial Hospital & Nursing Home.
He was an active member of St. Adrian Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council, as an Usher and Communion Distributer. He was also a member of the St. Josephs Society, the Knights of Columbus and the Adrian American Legion Argon Post #32. Virgil enjoyed fishing, playing cards, bowling, and woodworking. He loved spending time at the cabin on Lake Sarah with his entire family where one of his last days there he was able to set off his fireworks.
Virgil is survived by his wife, Alice Cook, Adrian; four children, Lori (Eugene) Mulder, Brandon, SD; Jodi (Jon) Thier, Adrian; Tammi (Shawn) Wittry, Sioux Falls, SD; and Bradley (Carmell) Cook, Brandon, SD; twelve grandchildren, Bobbi Jo (Chris) Baxter, Josh (Heather) Mulder, Jacob (Morgan) Mulder, Jared (Nicole) Mulder, Ashley (Joe) Henning, Austyn (special friend, Tony Reker) Thier, Evan Wittry, Avery Wittry, Bryson Wittry, Cambree Cook, Connor Cook and Corbin Cook; five great-grandchildren, Easton Baxter, Emersyn Baxter, Ryder Mulder, Teagan Mulder and Alivia Henning; two brothers, Jim (Mary) Cook, Sioux Falls, SD; and Orville (Gini) Cook, Windom; and five sisters, Lorraine Poss, Sibley, IA; Betty Herman, Ellsworth; Donna Jonas-Langel, La Mars, IA; Mary Carol (Lyle) Wolf, Sioux Falls, SD; and Marguerite (Willy) Nath, Luverne.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lorn Cook; a sister, Virginia Deutsch; in-laws, Sonny & Gen Honermann; six brothers-in-law, Dallas Poss, Ray Neyens, Paul Herman, Virgil Jonas, Larry Langel and Lawrence Deutsch; and a sister-in law, Darlene Cook.
Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 pm, with parish prayers at 8 pm, at St. Adrian Catholic Church in Adrian. Visitation also from 9:30 to 10:15 am Saturday at The Dingmann Funeral Home in Adrian. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Saturday at St. Adrian Catholic Church, in Adrian, officiated by Monsignor Richard Colletti. Burial with full military honors provided by the Adrian American Legion will be in the St. Adrian Cemetery.
