Welcome to the memorial page for

Dorothy I. Kirk

December 19, 1917 ~ October 7, 2015 (age 97) 97 Years Old
Dorothy I. Kirk of Fergus Falls, formerly of Worthington, MN, passed away on Wednesday, October 7 at Pioneer Suites in Fergus Falls.
Dorothy Irene Kirk was born December 19, 1917 in Sheldon, Iowa, the only child of Cornelius (Casey) and Theodora Hinrichs Brower.  She often recalled with great fondness her happy childhood growing up with her many cousins in rural Iowa.  She graduated from Marcus, Iowa High School in 1935 and attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa for one year before moving with her parents to Worthington.
While accompanying the Worthington Male Chorus, Dorothy met Vernon Kirk.  They were married on October 6, 1940 and lived for a few years in Fulda, Minnesota.  After Vernon's return from service in World War II, they moved back to Worthington where Vern worked at the State Bank and Dorothy was a homemaker.  On March 15, 1951 they adopted their only child, Linda Ann.  The family moved back to Fulda for a few years in the mid-sixties, but returned again to Worthington where Dorothy lived until moving to Fergus Falls in 2013.
Dorothy was gifted in so many areas.  She was an accomplished pianist and had a lovely singing voice.  She and Vern both sang in the First Methodist Choir for many years.  She had a great sense of style and an eye for beauty.  As a young wife, she loved finding treasures in antique shops and refinishing furniture. She enjoyed gardening and tended beautiful flowers well into her nineties.  Most of all, Dorothy had a gift for making friends and expressing true loving care for those close to her.  Some of her best times were spent with the early-morning coffee group at Perkins.
Dorothy was active in her church and it’s Women’s' Society.  She especially cherished her P.E.O. Sisterhood.  She and her mother were charter members of Chapter BT in Worthington in 1939.  Dorothy loved visits with her grandchildren.  She was so proud of their accomplishments and was delighted to get to know her great-grandchildren. She was sustained by her faith every day and was a model of strength and independence for all who knew her.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Vernon, in 1978.  She is survived by her daughter Ann (Kris) Svingen of Fergus Falls, her grand-daughter Thea (Jon) Fransen of Fergus Falls and their children, Natalie, Kristian and Maura, her grand-son John (Christel) Svingen of Bemidji, and her grand-daughter Elisabeth (Nathan) Murfield of Minneapolis and their children, Annelise and Leo, as well as nieces Dianne Monson of St. Paul and Gratia (Tom) Lee of Lakeville.
A memorial service for Dorothy will be held on Saturday, October 10, at 2:00 at the First United Methodist Church in Worthington with the Reverend Daren Flinck officiating.  The Dingmann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
